Seasonal Vegetables & Fruits: March (South Africa)

March 13, 2017

I can’t believe how fast this year is marching along (haha, excuse the pun) but really – the 3rd month of the year already and with winter fast approaching I am trying to enjoy my summer clothes, beach days AND of course all the summer foods.  In Durban we have been having such humid and hots days, but I like summer so I am not complaining 🙂

Here is a quick round up of seasonal vegetables and fruits you should find in the stores.  Always remembering that by buying seasonally you are ensuring the fruit and veg is generally fresh and higher in nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and should technically be cheaper 🙂 win – win in my books!

Vegetables: Sweet peppers, radishes, spinach, cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, turnips, leeks, onions, pumpkin, carrots and beetroot.

Starchy veg: Butternut and sweet potatoes

Fruit: Figs, pomegranate, plums, lemons, pears, grapes, pineapples, apples and spanspek.

Speaking of figs – the image here is of my breakfast one morning – fresh figs sliced onto almond butter on low GI toast…the second slice had hummus.  I always like something sweet and something savoury when I get the chance at breakfast 🙂  If you haven’t tried it -you must & you’ll thank me for it and if you have, you’ll know what a great combination this is! **if this last sentence rings any bells, it is from a movie I so enjoy – any guesses?”
