Yay, it is still summer in SA which means we have SO many amazing vegetables and fruits available to us at the stores and at local farmers markets AND even in some awesome new initiatives offering pick up fruit boxes in our local areas (main centres in and around Durban) – do you have something like this near your home?
For this month, here is a round up of what is seasonal so you can choose wisely in the stores and build your meal plan around fresh, tasty ingredients:
Vegetables: Asparagus, radishes, spinach, cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, turnips, onions and carrots.
Starchy Veg: Sweet potatoes and pumpkin.
Fruit: Bananas, plums, nectarines, pears, watermelons, pineapples, pomegranates, grapes, melons, peaches, apples, figs, spanspek, granadilla and all berries.
I am definitely tucking into more summer fruits – particularly adding pomegranate seeds to salads, also pears into salads and figs too. Fruits don’t need to be eaten as dessert or as a snack, add them to rocket or spinach or lettuce based salads for an unusual and fun twist. AND I certainly am stocking up on berries this month – and freezing them to save for smoothies
