My Concern with Freebie Smoothies…

April 26, 2016

In South Africa our Discovery Vitality members are currently being rewarded (very generously if I might add) by Vitality Rewards for achieving health and exercise goals every week. They are giving away thousands of free smoothies and coffees to members every week.

My concern lies with the choice that members are making in the Smoothie menu. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Kauai and I love that Discovery is doing something about making members more active BUT members are getting it wrong in my opinion about their menu selection.

One of their most popular Smoothies on their menu is the Peanut Butter Bomb or its sister Smoothie, the Peanut Butter Bliss – both nutty, chocolately deliciousnesses BUT super high in calories (or as we prefer in SA, kilojoules).

Just to make the comparison let’s compare the energy (*) in one 300ml Peanut Butter Bomb to a workout:
1 Peanut Butter Bomb (300ml): 60kg individual

= 1 hour moderate workout on the elliptical trainer
= 1 hour of high impact aerobics
= 30 minutes of running
= 2 hours of brisk walking

1 Peanut Butter Bomb (300ml): 80kg individual

= 1 hour kayaking
= 1 hour of light impact aerobics
= 30 minutes of fast paced swimming

1 Peanut Butter Bliss (300ml): 60kg individual

= 2 hours of leisurely cycling
= 1 hour of moderate effort stationary rowing
= 30 minutes of running (9.6 km/h)

1 Peanut Butter Bliss (300ml): 80kg person

= 1 hour of moderate workout on the elliptical trainer
= 2 hours of moderate paced walking
= 30 minutes running (12 km/r)

All this to say, just think before you choose your free smoothie and make sure your reward is worth the calories you’ve burnt during the week. It is at the end of the day, all about balancing your nutrients wisely.
